Tokyo-Based Smart Living & Cultural Designer

AUTHOR: VERA VON MONIKA

While exploring Tokyo’s innovative living spaces, I had the chance to speak with Hiroshi Tanaka, a designer blending smart living, interior aesthetics, and cultural experiences, about how innovation is shaping modern Japanese homes and lifestyle practices.

How are living spaces evolving in Japan beyond technology?

Spaces are becoming multi-sensory experiences. Lighting, textures, scent, and sound all interact to create environments that support well-being, reflection, and creativity, not just efficiency.

Which innovations impressed you most this year?

I’ve been exploring futons and furniture that adjust to the body, but also cultural installations that integrate ritual, mindfulness, and play into daily living.

How are lifestyle habits influenced by these trends?

People are rediscovering rhythm and intentionality in their routines. Tech and design guide energy flow, but culture and tradition anchor everyday life.

What’s your key advice for creating a balanced, innovative living space?

Think in layers, functional, emotional, and cultural. Each element should add depth, comfort, and personal resonance without overwhelming the senses.
