During Haute Couture Week, I had the opportunity to interview Chloé Martin, Couture Designer & Textile Artist, exploring how this season’s collections redefined luxury, craftsmanship, and storytelling in couture.
How did this season’s collections redefine the concept of “luxury”?
This season, luxury was about craftsmanship and narrative. Designers like Elie Saab and Ronald van der Kemp showcased intricate detailing and storytelling through their garments. Saab’s collection featured sculptural silhouettes and sensual detailing, reimagining glamour with attitude. Van der Kemp’s designs were a testament to the artistry of couture, blending traditional techniques with contemporary flair.
Which accessory stood out as a defining element this season?
Opera gloves made a significant comeback. From Schiaparelli’s dramatic capes to Valentino’s ethereal gowns, these gloves added a theatrical flair, transforming each ensemble into a statement piece.
How did nature influence the collections?
Nature was a profound muse. Chanel incorporated white camellia rosettes and colorful marigolds and peonies embroidered with sequins. Similarly, Glenn Martens at Maison Margiela presented a grass-green gown with ruffles resembling leaves on a stem, embodying the essence of a blooming garden.
What advice would you give to emerging couture designers?
Embrace innovation while respecting tradition. Couture is about pushing boundaries, but it’s essential to honor the techniques and history that have defined it.
