AUTHOR: VERA VON MONIKA
After your activities with ON/OFF and the passage of time, you have returned with a new single! If you were to introduce yourself to people who don't know you or your music yet, how would you do it?
I'm Kazuya Sakamoto, a singer who loves Japan's good old music and anime.
For those who already know you, what can they expect from the new Kazuya?
Expect Kazuya Sakamoto's worldview and lively talk. I have uniquely developed harmonies and choruses, so please look forward to my poignant singing voice with a touch of wabi-sabi.
What made you decide to return to the music industry as a solo artist?
I started singing on a streaming app, and that's when I thought I wanted to have a life where I could give courage and hope to people all over the world, with a broader perspective.
How does the creative process differ when working on a solo project compared to your work with ON/OFF?
When I was in ON/OFF, my twin brother and I would discuss and equally share the singing parts, dance, and music production. But as a solo artist, I can take more time and be more particular until I am satisfied, so I think you can feel more of the real Kazuya Sakamoto.
The title of your first solo single is "音色 -neiro-"! What is the concept of this single?
The concept is "a voice that coexists with everyone." "Sound" and "color" have existed before we were born and are naturally acquired. However, some people live with various issues, such as not being able to hear or speak. I also couldn't hear when I was young, but I learned the joy and resonance of music. With the thought of becoming an artist who coexists with everyone, I named it "Neiro".
Are there any themes or messages you want to convey through your solo music?
Life has its ups and downs, but there's no point in worrying! When you are troubled, look at and listen to Kazuya Sakamoto, and let's enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime life together!
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a solo artist?
As I’m just starting to climb up, it is the number of customers (laughs). Everyone, please support Kazuya Sakamoto!
How do you think the Japanese music industry has changed since you were last active?
Without a doubt, CD sales have declined. Global distribution has become the norm, so I think luck can come around more easily for anyone. Also, there are more songs with high keys. For men, it's Hi-B, and for women, it's Hi-D.
You have been active in the music industry for many years. What's the secret to maintaining your motivation and passion for creating music?
I can maintain it because of all the people who support me. Also, it is important not to forget the spirit of enjoying even the little things.
How has your experience as a vocal trainer influenced your approach to singing and songwriting?
It has broadened my range of expression. I can now use the entire stage for performances, change my singing style according to the song, and more clearly vary how I incorporate consonants and push vowels.
Are there any collaborations or joint performances you would like to explore in your future solo projects?
I would like to collaborate with artists from around the world! I want to take the lead in conveying Japanese culture. And after this, I would like to perform with Vera Von Monika!
Can you tell us about your future plans?
ON/OFF will revive for a limited time at the German event "Mine Festival" from August 16th to 18th!
You have many fans overseas as well. Do you have any plans for live performances abroad?
Currently, only the above-mentioned event, so I’m waiting for offers! Let's liven up this once-in-a-lifetime together.
As a vocal trainer, what advice would you give to aspiring singers?
Don't forget to enjoy yourself. When you are working hard, what was once fun can become routine without you realizing it. So, even if you need to stop for a bit, remember what made you want to become a singer in the first place. I'm sure it will open up your path. And if you're still lost, please take my voice training (laughs).
Your fans are eagerly awaiting your comeback. Do you have any special messages you would like to convey to them?
I'm really sorry to have kept you waiting! I want to send out my solo activities to the world, so I'd like to sing energetically to increase the chances of meeting you all, even if just a little. I love you all.
